On February 20th, The Minority Coalition of Cass County honored fifty women as leaders in Cass County at their annual Black History Breakfast. Brenda serves on the board of the Minority Coalition, which planned and put on the event. As a local author, Brenda was recognized at the breakfast for leadership, along with many other inspiring women in Cass County. Brenda's husband, Bill, provided the music for the event on the trombone, accompanying the singing of the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing", often called the "Black National Anthem."

Speaker for the event and also included in the awards was Cathy LaPointe, treasurer for the Underground Railroad Society of Cass County (URSCC). LaPointe told the ten year history of the URSCC and how they are making known the history of Underground Railroad in the local communities; how black and white citizens worked together to help freedom seekers escape the chains of slavery in the south. Through the URSCC's Wax Museum program given to the local schools young children and teens are learning to take pride in the work of their ancestors and their community in helping on the Underground Railroad.
